Fort Myers shops, restaurants, and movie theaters

We love Sanibel, and we spend most of the morning and daytime around the beach, on the grounds at Pointe Santo, or somewhere on the Island in search of the bliss that we so readily find here.

But even if 76.2% of the time you'd rather be on Sanibel, it's still true that Fort Myers offers a lot to people on vacation like us. Here are some of our favorites.

Spada Spa. Betina loves this spa, and gets some combination of manicures, pedicures, waxings, colorings, stylings, and massages on every visit, often twice. It's also a good place to get a haircut while you're waiting for your wife. I've come to actually enjoy iced tea because of the amount of time I can spend waiting here because it was both possible and necessary to extend the massage from 60 to 120 minutes.

Sushi Thai, the best sushi we have found in the area. It's a bit of a drive to and from Sanibel Island, but I mention it because it is worth it to us, at least once per vacation. The sushi is fresh and expertly prepared - it easily compares to Yama or Sushi Seki in Manhattan. The Thai food is very good too.

The items from here on out are big stores of the kind that you're likely to find in any metropolitan area, and they not only don't offer local color, they're on a corporate mission to rob the world of local color. But it can be useful to know where these places are when you're on vacation and one-stop shopping will save you a lot of time and trouble.

Bell Tower Shops, for the movies and of course a lot of shopping. The movie listings are here, courtesy of that evil corporate behemoth, Google.

Five Guys Burgers & Fries. It's hardly a restaurant. But if you think fast food has to be bad for you and taste like the sole of a farmer's show -- you'll find out that it only has to be bad for you. Please don't blame me if you heard about it here first. I'm only glad that they don't serve milkshakes. The maps shows the location nearest to Sanibel. If we don't have time to visit Sushi Thai, and we feel we've just eaten too many salads lately, this is our choice.

Super Target. If you decide you desperately need to shop for all kinds of random stuff at lower-than-Island prices, this is a good place. Dangerously close to Five Guys. The maps shows the location closest to Sanibel.

Publix. It's just another huge grocery store, but the map shows the location closest to Sanibel - a very short distance from the Causeway.
